Food Safari, the food experiences business, offers the ideal gift for food and drink fanatics this Christmas. For anyone who’s ever longed to discover the secrets of the smokehouse, to get the knack of the butcher’s knife, fancied fungi foraging or skinning a rabbit, Food Safari’s series of food events and workshops might be the answer.
Food Safari’s gourmet food experiences days go one or two steps beyond a traditional cookery school and take you behind the scenes of some of Suffolk's best food and drink producers to learn a range of new food skills.
On TV we are used to celebrity chefs visiting farms and producers to find out where the best ingredients are produced but for most people this privileged access to farms and food producers is out of bounds. Food Safari opens the door by offering ‘Field to Fork’ days that combine farm walks, wild food forays, or fishing trips with butchery and cookery workshops and culminating with fantastic feasts featuring the fruits of the day’s safari. If you are looking for an unusual and memorable Christmas present for foodies, look no further.
You might take a relaxed fishing trip on the River Ore in search of lobsters, crabs and other seafood before taking a tour of a traditional smokehouse and oysterbeds at 50-year old Pinney’s of Orford on Seafood in a Day. Or you could join a wild food foray in search of samphire and sea purslane on a private estate on the banks of the beautiful River Blyth near Southwold. Or get hands-on skinning and boning a rabbit on Wild Meat in a Day.
New for 2011 Food Safari offers Bread in the Day with the brand new Pumphouse Bakery in Orford. Not only will you see at first hand the world of an artisan baker you’ll also learn how to scale, shape and proof sourdough and discover the art of the perfect croissant.
Sutton Hoo Chicken has become famous well beyond Suffolk for its outstanding free range and organic birds. On Chicken in a Day we’ll visit the farm and see how high welfare standards produce such good meat. Back at base there’ll be a butchery workshop and cookery demonstration and a delicious lunch.
Attendees always leave a Food Safari day with new skills to try in the kitchen at home, a handful of recipes and usually some of the day’s produce; as well as a deeper understanding of the food we eat and a greater connection to the people who make it and the landscape it comes from.
“Food Safari is a genuine and generous-hearted enterprise, that is properly ‘field to fork”
Hattie Ellis, Scoff, The Spectator
“Food Safari is the essence of the gastrozeitgeist A Suffolk-based business founded by arch foodie Polly Robinson. It offers a tantalising range of ‘field to fork days.’”
Sudi Pigott, Country & Town House Magazine
“Food Safari’s Catch & Cook offers time at sea, glorious food and a chance to hook the freshest fish. Try it – you’ll be hooked.” Adrian Tierney-Jones, Coast
Gift vouchers are available for all Food Safari events, which start at £75 per person for a half day or £150 for a full day.
